Blog Monetisation for Writers: How to Earn Beyond Freelance Work

My first blog article was not for my blog. It was actually a guest post. A $10 blog post. Around this time, I was fed up with the idea of being paid little sums for an extensive, research-backed article.

Not like there weren't better options, but I live in Nigeria, and with few options to choose from, considering the restrictions on payment methods, I was fed up.

If you've been freelancing for a while, you've probably asked yourself:

"Can I make $1000/mo freelance writing?" Or "Is freelance writing still in demand?"

Short answer: yes. But freelancing alone won't build you long-term wealth. I learnt that the hard way. Rather than starting my own blog, I would trade my time to contribute quality articles to other websites. Only for a little sum.

This post isn't about writing more words; it’s about turning your words into income streams that keep paying you... even while you sleep. I know this "passive income idea" has been overrated thanks to fake gurus online. But I hope this article serves as an eye-opener.

Why Writers Should Look Beyond Freelance Work

As great as freelancing is for every beginner writer, it can also serve as a trap, as it creates the illusion that the little you're being paid for work is your worth.

That's why we see so many freelancers struggle to charge their worth, because they feel the little they get is enough.

When I started, I used to wonder, "How much should I charge for writing 1000 words?" Or "Can I make $5000/mo with copywriting?"

The idea of trading your time for cash to stop working didn't apply to this concept.

Why? If you stop writing... your money stops as well.

That's why many pros eventually build passive income systems like affiliate blogs, writing communities, or digital libraries. The idea behind this is to use their skills once and get paid over and over and over again.

Plus, you don’t need a huge audience to achieve this, nor do you need an expensive setup. You just need a clear plan to monetise content as a writer. And these 2 methods are quietly becoming the backbone of the modern writer economy:

"affiliates" or "membership models" in 2025

How to Earn Money Through Writing Blogs

Now that we're done talking theories, the answer remains. How do I actually turn my writing into a money machine?

The mistake most people make after realising this is that they start searching, "Which blogging platform is best for making money?"

Or "Do beginner bloggers make money?"

Rather than coming up with a strategy that works, they want the platform to do it all.

How writers can earn passive income from blogs beyond freelance work.

MY NO B.S. STRATEGY

  • Choose a profitable blog niche: If you’re not tired of seeing it without actually implementing it. Trust me, you were made to be a bum. Because I see people talk against picking a niche a lot, like it’s a bad thing.

It's just like saying you want your child to grow up without picking a career path. Your niche is your path. Plus, in 2025, niches like "productivity", "AI tools", and "digital writing tips" are booming.

The idea is to pick something you can talk about endlessly and run with it.

  • Pick the right platform: WordPress is the most flexible, but platforms like Substack are growing fast, especially for writers who want to sell memberships or premium newsletters.

I currently use Blogger, but as I said before, the platforms should be the least of your worries.

  • Write with intent: Don’t just share tips. Solve problems that people would pay to fix. Think: “How to start a blog that makes money in 10 simple steps”, and write about that.

Or better still. You can write about "What is the best niche to start blogging in 2025?"

  • Monetise early: This is where it gets tricky. Ensure to only partner with affiliate platforms in your niche. You can check out affiliate links for tools you already use (like Grammarly, Notion, or Medium Partner Program).

Add a simple “resources” page or recommend tools inside your articles.

What Is the Most Profitable Passive Income for Writers?

The idea of actually having passive streams of income has been adulterated. Passive income isn’t magic. It’s just a smart setup.

When people ask, "Can AI help generate passive income?" Or "How much money do I need to invest to make $3000/mo?"

They're simply asking the wrong questions. You don’t need $10,000 in savings or a fancy setup. You just need to create systems where your blog does the heavy lifting.

A single post can generate affiliate clicks, newsletter signups, or course sales... all while you sleep or binge YouTube.

That’s how writers earn passive income from blogs beyond freelancing.

Passive Income Ideas for Writers

Here are how writers earn passively through passive income ideas:

  • Affiliate Blog: The most popular method ever. You simply write product-based content around tools you love. I.e., "Best AI tools for freelance writers 2025".

  • Membership Blog: Offer premium articles, templates, or video guides for paying members. Substack helps writers achieve this.

  • Writing Templates or Notion Docs: Sell your workflow. Writers pay to save time.

  • Digital Mini-Courses: This method, I don't really trust. However, if implemented rightly, it can bring massive results. You simply create a $25 guide that helps people start a writing side hustle.

These are small steps that compound. You won’t make $10,000 a month overnight, but once things click, they stay that way.

How to Start a Blog for Passive Income

Well, I just explained it already. Simply:

I. Pick a niche that excites you.  II. Choose your blog platform (WordPress or Substack).

III. Write one helpful post a week.  IV. Add affiliate links.  V. Collect emails from day one.

VI. Learn SEO basics.  VII. Promote on LinkedIn, Reddit, or Twitter.

The straightforward, no-B.S. approach that guarantees success, but do people still read blogs?

Yes... especially ones that feel human.

The key isn’t to post daily. It’s to post consistently with intent. Every article should help your reader, not just fill space. Be so intentional with each word you use.

That’s how your blog becomes a silent business partner.

Build Once, Earn for Years

If you’ve made it this far, you’re already thinking like a business-minded writer. Blog monetisation for writers isn’t about replacing freelancing. It’s about evolving beyond it. It’s about creating systems that outlive deadlines.

Start small. Write with clarity. And build a blog that earns when you’re offline. Love the article? Head over to the sidebar to subscribe or drop a comment below.
